About Me

jan-horrox1I trained at Norwich and then Walthamstow Schools of Art. For several years I taught final year fashion students at Somerset college of Art.

After graduating I launched ‘Jan Horrox Knitwear’ – a fashion label that sold both at home and internationally for over twenty years. The company regularly exhibited in London Fashion Week and at the New York Pret. We sold to the USA and Canada in the West; Japan and Australasia in the East and to the UK Europe closer to home.

In the early ‘80’s I opened ‘Softwear’, a shop in Belsize Park, London.NW3.  This magical emporium sold all things knitted and for knitting; wonderful yarns garments, sculptures and hangings.

I have also worked, on a freelance basis, in advertising, TV and films. Ewan McGregor wore a Jan Horrox designed sweater in ‘Trainspotting’. I’ve also worked with other designers in developing their knitwear ranges.

Since 2000 I’ve changed my focus and have become intrigued by the creative possibilities offered by textiles both in picture or 3D format. In many ways this was a natural progression for me involving many of the techniques and skills I had acquired in my career thus far.

In 2003, I became interested in Needle Sculpted Cloth Figures and set up www.jan-horrox.com in order to import and source materials for this activity. I believe this to be the UK’s premier site in this area.

I now work from home, a large Victorian house with plenty of studio space in Cromer, as the publicity says ‘the Gem’ of the beautiful North Norfolk coast.
